Summary

From New York Times bestselling author of Lead From The Outside and political leader Stacey Abrams, a blueprint to end voter suppression, empower our citizens, and take back our country。

"With each page, she inspires and empowers us to create systems that reflect a world in which all voices are heard and all people believe and feel that they matter。" Kerry Washington

A recognized expert on fair voting and civic engagement, Abrams chronicles a chilling account of how the right to vote and the principle of democracy have been and continue to be under attack。 Abrams would have been the first African American woman governor, but experienced these effects firsthand, despite running the most innovative race in modern politics as the Democratic nominee in Georgia。 Abrams didn’t win, but she has not conceded。 The book compellingly argues for the importance of robust voter protections, an elevation of identity politics, engagement in the census, and a return to moral international leadership。

Our Time Is Now draws on extensive research from national organizations and renowned scholars, as well as anecdotes from her life and others’ who have fought throughout our country’s history for the power to be heard。 The stakes could not be higher。 Here are concrete solutions and inspiration to stand up for who we are now。

"This is a narrative that describes the urgency that compels me and millions more to push for a different American story than the one being told today。 It's a story that is one part danger, one part action, and all true。 It's a story about how and why we fight for our democracy and win。" - Stacey Abrams

This book is great as an educational tool, which for an audiobook was also a negative for me。 It's packed with a ton of great facts and data, but because of that feels more like a textbook。 Perhaps this should be a textbook for activists and politicians - but I've done several other audiobooks from politicians in the past that were far more engaging。 That being said I still love Stacey Abrams and am grateful to her for all she does and for this book。 If you want a book with voting facts and data This book is great as an educational tool, which for an audiobook was also a negative for me。 It's packed with a ton of great facts and data, but because of that feels more like a textbook。 Perhaps this should be a textbook for activists and politicians - but I've done several other audiobooks from politicians in the past that were far more engaging。 That being said I still love Stacey Abrams and am grateful to her for all she does and for this book。 If you want a book with voting facts and data & information to back up your next round of liberal or progressive activism, this is the book for you。 。。。more

If I could give this more stars I would。 Very well written and explains not only what has gone wrong with the American voting system but also how to fix it with concrete actions we can all take starting today。 Read this book and get ready to fight for the future we deserve。

Listened to Stacey Abrams book and enjoyed hearing about her life and the path she took to get where she is today -- an activist for voting rights and someone who strives to lead the country one day。

If you care about our democracy, read this book。 Can we clone Stacey Abrams so that we can have one of her in every state? Or better yet, Stacey Abrams for President!

5 stars just because it exposes all that we all ready know。。。but it still shocks me。When will USA come to its senses?Calling your #Senators matters。 Engaging with your elected officials is a cornerstone of American democracy—as is the freedom to cast your ballot。The voting rights group Fair Fight Action, headed by Stacey Abrams, has announced a month-long campaign to help mobilize young voters of color around the For the People Act。The campaign is called Hot Call Summer。

On the one hand, I learned a ton about voter suppression (the presence of I was somewhat skeptical about before this reading)。 Abrams clearly explains how the cumulative effect of restrictions on voter registration, voter ID, absentee ballots, and other parts of the voting process form a chilling effect on election results。 And she does this using both her own experiences in Georgia and other state and federal elections。 As a result of reading this, I did a ton of research and introspection on v On the one hand, I learned a ton about voter suppression (the presence of I was somewhat skeptical about before this reading)。 Abrams clearly explains how the cumulative effect of restrictions on voter registration, voter ID, absentee ballots, and other parts of the voting process form a chilling effect on election results。 And she does this using both her own experiences in Georgia and other state and federal elections。 As a result of reading this, I did a ton of research and introspection on voting in the United States。But, on the other hand, I found the prose repetitive, vague, and often a chore to get through。 There are too many paragraphs focused on the imperative for change and too many sentences that serve little function besides outlining a point。 The wording seldom sings, and the chapter construction (while following the typical approach of going from anecdote to wider discussion of the issue) never caught me up in the story。 There's a lack of narrative in the book that flattens the discourse。'So, if you want to get information on the problems with voting in the United States, this is a good resource, but not necessarily an interesting read。 。。。more

I didn't enjoy this as much as her first。 Very depressing read on the state of the country, but that's not news if you followed her election and the 2020。 I didn't enjoy this as much as her first。 Very depressing read on the state of the country, but that's not news if you followed her election and the 2020。 。。。more

A good overview of the issues facing voters in the US wrapped in a compelling personal story。 Abrams offers a clear voice for the importance of democracy at its finest and through the book it is evident that she values the process/institution of democracy as much as her personal positions on issues。 I did find it to be a tad partisan on occasion。 I'm not faulting Abrams, she is after all a Democrat, but an occasionally more distanced perspective could have made for a broader audience。 Likewise, A good overview of the issues facing voters in the US wrapped in a compelling personal story。 Abrams offers a clear voice for the importance of democracy at its finest and through the book it is evident that she values the process/institution of democracy as much as her personal positions on issues。 I did find it to be a tad partisan on occasion。 I'm not faulting Abrams, she is after all a Democrat, but an occasionally more distanced perspective could have made for a broader audience。 Likewise, I found it disheartening that she didn't address the issues of money in the election process or the detriments of a two-party system, both issues very evident to anyone looking at the American democracy from the outside。 And yet, while Abrams holds a number of positions I wouldn't ascribe to, she nevertheless is an inspiring patriot, a powerful champion for the oppressed, and a voice of hope for the future of American democracy。 If all American politicians, no matter their affiliations or beliefs, treated the institutions of democracy the way Abrams does, then the US might actually be able to live up to being the paragon of democracy it so often claims to be。 。。。more

Good overview of voting and the need for marginalized voices Stacey provides a thorough examination of how important voting is and why it should be as easy as possible for marginalized groups to vote and to run。 She very kindly gives a condemnation of traditional democratic campaign policies in the hopes of leading to something better。 She compassionately explains why so many people have given up on voting and what the Democratic Party should do to remedy that。

Loving Stacey Abrams! Best political scientist I’ve ever encountered, and I’m one myself so I know this as a factoid among the many substantial achievements on her resume。 This book drew me out of a sickening hopelessness that I was getting myself into about the American politics of our time。 It’s honest and brutal as it should be, and it’s also inspiring and motivational as it must be or else we’re done for in terms of equal rights + opportunities for ALL—not just for white folks and the wealth Loving Stacey Abrams! Very much enjoyed this writing from Stacey Abrams。 The respect I have for her and her work has grown immensely。 I definitely appreciate her ability to make these very complex laws and regulations around voter suppression very easy to comprehend。 I also commend Stacey for being just as clear as she was on the solutions as the issues。 Very informative read。

Voting is a fundamental right and primary responsibility in any democracy。 The people put in power through elections affect every aspect of modern life。This book explains in accessible language the importance of voting (and being represented via the census) as well as a sort of playbook for voter suppression and what people can do about it。

A thorough account of the importance of voting, how voter suppression occurs and what we risk if we don't take action。 Written as a call to arms for the 2020 election, it highlights the importance of the census, combating gerrymandering so that the government actually reflects the views of the people, and the importance of protecting the right of each citizen to vote。 A thorough account of the importance of voting, how voter suppression occurs and what we risk if we don't take action。 Written as a call to arms for the 2020 election, it highlights the importance of the census, combating gerrymandering so that the government actually reflects the views of the people, and the importance of protecting the right of each citizen to vote。 。。。more

Books 2021#53: Our Time Is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America by Stacey Abrams。This is a very difficult book to read because it makes you very angry to see in writing what you already know about voter suppression。 It's a ploy currently being used by the Groping Old Predators who will try to find Jim Crow-like laws to keep people outside of the clan from participating in their constitutional right。 Unlike Ron DeSantis' statement that voting is a privilege, non-ignorant citizens Books 2021#53: Our Time Is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America by Stacey Abrams。This is a very difficult book to read because it makes you very angry to see in writing what you already know about voter suppression。 It's a ploy currently being used by the Groping Old Predators who will try to find Jim Crow-like laws to keep people outside of the clan from participating in their constitutional right。 Unlike Ron DeSantis' statement that voting is a privilege, non-ignorant citizens know that every state should have an easy way to register and to vote。Abrams gives the history of voter suppression and includes all major parties in the practice。 She also chastises Democrats for not including the potential non-voters in their strategy which cost them the state of Georgia among others in 2016。The book was written in 2019 and published before the attempted coup of January 6 based on suspicions of voter fraud。 She remains very optimistic about this country's future。 A sentiment that I do not, and have never, shared。Four out of five stars。 。。。more

I listened to this book on Audible, narrated by Stacey Abrams herself。 It was very informative about voter suppression and the ways in which our current system disenfranchises minorities and people of color。 I appreciate all the examples and personal stories she shared。 My only caveat would be the length。。。it felt a little long winded at times。

A must-read for anyone involved in voting efforts or just starting in democratic/electoral politics。 Stacey Abrams has written an important and comprehensive primer on the struggles to get everyone to vote and every vote to count。 Weaving in her own experiences, stories from her gubernatorial bid, and her work to found Fair Fight Action, Abrams' research and stories need to be acknowledged and addressed by anyone hoping to maintain a strong democracy。 A must-read for anyone involved in voting efforts or just starting in democratic/electoral politics。 Stacey Abrams has written an important and comprehensive primer on the struggles to get everyone to vote and every vote to count。 Weaving in her own experiences, stories from her gubernatorial bid, and her work to found Fair Fight Action, Abrams' research and stories need to be acknowledged and addressed by anyone hoping to maintain a strong democracy。 。。。more

An inside look to real voter suppression。 As a white female I just assumed when you vote and put your ballot in the box it is counted。 Shame on me for thinking our government is looking out for all citizens and that our system is perfect。 Voter suppression is real and all US citizens should be able to vote when and how they can。 Voting is not a privilege, it is a right。 ALL voices should be heard。 Thank you Stacey Abrams and team for your tireless work in getting the message out。

Stacey Abrams has a knack for breaking down highly complex legalese and opaque voter statistics into something the rest of us can understand。 She provides actionable steps to diminish voter suppression in our country, and she does it with a heart that is so obviously, lovingly hell-bent on giving voice to those whose have been unfairly excluded from the electoral process。 Abrams is the sort of person who ought to be in high office。 And if she keeps winning suffrage battles at her current rate of Stacey Abrams has a knack for breaking down highly complex legalese and opaque voter statistics into something the rest of us can understand。 She provides actionable steps to diminish voter suppression in our country, and she does it with a heart that is so obviously, lovingly hell-bent on giving voice to those whose have been unfairly excluded from the electoral process。 Abrams is the sort of person who ought to be in high office。 And if she keeps winning suffrage battles at her current rate of speed。。。 she'll have more than enough votes to make it happen。 。。。more

A ‘must-read’ for all Americans, regardless of party affiliation。 The work Ms。 Abrams is doing is critical for our country and this book clearly lays it out。 Admittedly, it’s not the most exciting read and I did struggle to push through the last 1/3。 However any page read out of this book will be worth the effort。 Quotes I enjoyed:“Because I learned long ago that winning doesn’t always mean you get the prize。 Sometimes you get progress, and that counts。”The best democratic acts are the ones that A ‘must-read’ for all Americans, regardless of party affiliation。 The work Ms。 Abrams is doing is critical for our country and this book clearly lays it out。 Admittedly, it’s not the most exciting read and I did struggle to push through the last 1/3。 However any page read out of this book will be worth the effort。 Quotes I enjoyed:“Because I learned long ago that winning doesn’t always mean you get the prize。 Sometimes you get progress, and that counts。”The best democratic acts are the ones that can bring people together, not by pretending we all have the same issues but by recognizing the obstacles that some of us face and the opportunities that all of us want。 (Pg。 147) 。。。more
